Science-Based Targets

Emissions reduction targets aligned with climate science to meet the Paris Agreement goals

What is Science-Based Targets?

Science-based targets (SBTs) are emissions reduction targets that are in line with what the latest climate science deems necessary to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement—limiting global warming to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursuing efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C.

Why It Matters for SECR

While voluntary, SBTs demonstrate credible climate commitment. SECR data provides the baseline and tracking mechanism for these targets.

Examples

  • 1

    Near-term targets: typically 5-10 years

  • 2

    Net-zero targets: by 2040 or 2050

  • 3

    Absolute vs intensity-based targets

SECR Reporting Requirements

Not a SECR requirement, but SECR data can support SBT progress reporting.
